Background of the Study

Green energy adoption has become imperative for reducing carbon emissions and fostering sustainable industrial development. The steel manufacturing sector, a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, is at the forefront of the transition to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and biomass. Globally, industries that adopt green energy report enhanced environmental performance, reduced costs, and improved market competitiveness (Williams et al., 2023).

In Nigeria, the steel manufacturing sector is crucial for economic development but faces challenges related to energy costs and environmental concerns. Despite the potential benefits of green energy adoption, progress remains slow due to infrastructure gaps and policy limitations (Okafor & Adeleke, 2024). This study evaluates the extent of green energy adoption in Nigeria’s steel manufacturing sector and its implications for sustainability.

Statement of the Problem

The Nigerian steel manufacturing sector relies heavily on non-renewable energy sources, contributing to environmental degradation and high operational costs. Despite global trends toward renewable energy, adoption in Nigeria remains limited, hindering sustainability and competitiveness. Barriers such as inadequate infrastructure, high initial costs, and limited government support exacerbate the problem (Usman & Bello, 2023).

This study examines the extent of green energy adoption in Nigeria’s steel sector, identifying challenges and proposing actionable recommendations for fostering sustainability.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the extent of green energy adoption in Nigeria’s steel manufacturing sector.

  2. To identify challenges hindering green energy implementation.

  3. To recommend strategies for promoting green energy adoption in the sector.

Research Questions

  1. What is the extent of green energy adoption in Nigeria’s steel manufacturing sector?

  2. What challenges hinder the implementation of green energy solutions?

  3. What strategies can promote green energy adoption in the sector?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Green energy adoption does not significantly impact the sustainability of Nigeria’s steel manufacturing sector.

  2. Challenges to green energy implementation do not significantly hinder its adoption.

  3. Proposed strategies for green energy adoption do not significantly improve the sector’s environmental performance.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on green energy adoption in Nigeria’s steel manufacturing sector from 2023 to 2025. Limitations include variability in energy policy implementation and access to detailed industry data.

Definitions of Terms

Green Energy: Renewable energy sources that have minimal environmental impact, such as solar, wind, and biomass.
Steel Manufacturing Sector: Industries involved in the production of steel for construction and industrial use.
Sustainability: Practices that meet current needs without compromising future resources.
